Researchers in Latvia have joined forces to investigate how climate change will potentially influence Latvian lakes, rivers and the Baltic Sea coast and coastal waters, and to elaborate science-based proposals to adapt to and mitigate adverse impacts.

BALTEX Workshop "Climate change impacts on the water environment in Latvia and implications for the southern Baltic Sea basin” will be held at the University of Latvia at 13.00. Results of four years of work by the National Research Programme „Climate Change Impact on the Waters of Latvia” will be presented at the workshop. The Latvian Ministry of Education and Science Steering Group and the International Consultative Council for the National Research Programme will participate in the workshop.

The Ministry of Education and Science has opened a call for the first stage of multi-lateral research projects in the European Regional Development Fund activity “Support to science and research”.
The aim of the activity is to support applied research which promotes integration of science and production activities and the application of scientific results according to priorities in science, including environmental science (climate change regional impact on water ecosystems and adaptation, the sustainable management and protection of the Baltic Sea and inland waters). Financing for the first stage is 41 957 399 lats. Project budgets can be range from 70280 to 491 962 lats.
The deadline for project submissions is 14 December, 2009. The call is published athttp://esfondi.izm.gov.lv/1385.html
The Ministry of Education and Science will organize a free informative seminar for project applicants. Registration by e-mailesf@izm.gov.lv; the deadline for the registration is 26 October, 2009.

The first meeting of the Inter-Ministry and Expert Working Group on adaptation to climate change will be held in the Ministry of Environment, 25 Peldu Street, Room 409, 13:00.
The following items are included in the meeting agenda: information about scientific argumentation of climate change and the necessity of adaptation to climate change, direction of adaptation policies, practices in European Union and Latvia, discussions.

September 2008
The September 18th decision of the Ministry of the Environment established the Adaptation to Climate Change Working Group. The group director is M. Kïaviòð, whereas the deputy director is A. Briede. The Working Group determines priority directions for action in which research is needed, advises on how to improve data quality, as well as, offers suggestions regarding adaptation to climate change.

The international conference “Climate Change and Waters” will be held in cooperation with the INTERREG IIIB project ASTRA. Participants will be mainly researchers of the Baltic Region, representatives of local governments and decision makers. The aim of this conference is to present current studies on climate change in the Baltic Region, as well as policy measures, and practical activities towards adaptation to the climate change.

Program participants gathered for the kick-off meeting. Most of the researchers involved in the 1st phase took part. Program coordinators M.Klavins and A.Andrusaitis provided an introduction on the practical aspects of work. The pro-rector of University of Latvia I.Muiznieks wished the program team success. Work-package (WP) leaders U.Bethers, V.Jansons, G.Springe, G.Eberhards, J.Aigars, A.Ikauniece and K.Abolina presented information about tasks and specific workplans of each WP during the 1st phase. Participants discussed issues related to collaboration among WPs.

National Research Program “Climate Change Impact on the Water Environment of Latvia” was officially launched by signing an agreement with Latvian Council of Science. The Program will be implemented in 4 phases spanning 2006 – 2009.
